The project was announced by the Tasmanian Government in June 2017 following a successful bid for funding through the Australian Government’s Aged Care Approvals Round. The bid was submitted by Wintringham Specialist Aged Care and was supported by the Tasmanian Government.

The project proposes the reuse of Wirksworth House as an office for outreach and support services for the elderly living in the community, and development of the western area of the site for a new residential aged care facility.

The facility is based in the highly successful and award-winning Wintringham Model and would be the first of its kind in Tasmania.

It is anticipated the project will be completed in 2020 and the facility will be fully operational in 2021, providing accommodation for 50 Tasmanian residents.

The graphic below depicts the critical project milestones through to full operations.

The construction of this facility will create approximately 50 full-time construction jobs and provide total economic activity of $30 million.

The proposed site will be developed and owned by the Crown and managed under lease by Wintringham Specialist Aged Care; an award-winning community-based support and aged care provider.

The Department of Communities Tasmania is the responsible development lead in the project and would own the facility, once built.

Wintringham Specialist Aged Care is the specialist service provider; having secured funding and designed the programs and services to be delivered out of the new and existing premises.

Based locally, the development will create more than 31 full time jobs over the long term for aged care staff with an annual operating revenue expected to inject $4.2 million into the local economy.
