More young people will have access to safe accommodation and support to build independence with the tender to construct a new Youth2 Independence (Y2I) facility in Burnie advertised on Saturday, 26 February 2022.

The Tasmanian Government is committed to improving vulnerable young Tasmanians’ access to housing and education and increasing new affordable housing options across the State.

The new Y2I facility will provide 25 independent single-bedroom units for young people aged 16-24 years, as well as staff accommodation, and communal and associated facilities.

The Mooreville Road site is ideal for the new youth facility as it is next to both the Burnie TasTAFE campus and Hellyer College, and is close to health and transport services, and other educational and training facilities.

It will be managed by Youth, Family and Community Connections (YFCC), a not-for-profit community organisation that provides a range of services to young people, families and individuals across the North-West and West coasts.

The construction tender closes on 27 April, with the successful builder to be announced after tenders have been assessed and approved. Construction is expected to start in June 2022 and be completed by June 2023.
