Architect's render of Y2I Hobart

More young people will have access to safe accommodation and support to build independence with construction underway on a new Youth2 Independence (Y2I) facility in Hobart.

The Tasmanian Government is committed to increasing new affordable housing and improving vulnerable young Tasmanians’ access to housing and education.

The Hobart facility will be located near TasTAFE, transport and other services and will accommodate up to 26 young people aged 16-24 years.

Each young person living at the facility will have their own studio space and have access to an onsite manager, shared kitchen, and indoor and outdoor recreation and quiet spaces.

Communities Tasmania has been working with Liminal Architecture and the Salvation Army to ensure the Y2I design is successfully incorporated on the site of the current accommodation facility.

Resident privacy and amenity are priorities and contemporary architectural solutions will ensure the two residential facilities operate independently.

The Y2I development is an optimal solution for this inner-city site, which was originally designed to provide more residential units.

Vos Construction and Joinery has been announced as the successful builder. Construction work started on 28 March 2022 and is expected to be completed by June 2023.
