Why is there severe pressure on the housing system in Tasmania

There is a shortage of affordable housing in Tasmania. This is contributing to many people experiencing homelessness.  You may have seen in the news that some Tasmanian families are living in tents.  As winter is approaching, many people are being turned away from short term crisis shelters, leaving them no option but to sleep on the streets.  Public housing in Tasmania is a scarce resource, and some of the properties owned by Housing Tasmania are not fully occupied, which means that there are more bedrooms than people in the property. This has impacted on the pressure of the housing system.

What is Housing Tasmania doing to help people experiencing homelessness

One of the things that Housing Tasmania is doing to help people who are homeless is to provide an incentive to tenants that are under-occupying larger properties to move to smaller properties.  Housing Tasmania has met the past needs of larger families by providing a larger home when required, and understands that the housing needs of these tenants may have changed since they first moved into their homes. Housing Tasmania is talking to all tenants who are under occupying a larger property, about their current housing needs and the incentives available to transfer to a smaller property.

If tenants who are under occupying a property agree to take advantage of the incentives offered and move to a smaller home, this will help to provide the homes required to applicants on the Housing Register who require a larger home.

Why is Housing Tasmania talking to me

We have been talking to you because you live in a larger property and you are under occupying the home.  We would like you to help us take the pressure off the housing system in Tasmania. There are families on the Housing Register that are in need of a home that is similar to the one you currently live in.

We would like you to move into a smaller property, and we have some incentives that we would like to offer you.

What are the incentives being offered to me

  • We will pay for all costs to move you
  • We may complete some work on another property that would be attractive to you, for example new carpet or other minor upgrades

We would talk to you about what type of items would be beneficial for you in a smaller property, and what Housing Tasmania can provide as an incentive for you to move.

Do the incentives offered have a time limit

Housing Tasmania will only be offering the incentives talked about for a short time. The offer is only available until 31 July 2018.

Every tenant under occupying a property owned by Housing Tasmania with four or more bedrooms will be contacted. Tenants will have time to get advice and consider the offer.

Do I have to move

This is a voluntary program, and we will not force you to move.  You cooperation however, will greatly assist another Tasmanian family in need.

What do I need to do if I want to move

We have talked to you now about what your housing needs are – please let us know if you need more information or some time to think about what we have talked about.  The incentives to move to a smaller home are only available until 31 July 2018, so it is important that you let us know as soon as possible if you want to move.

We will talk to you when a property that meets your needs is available, and make arrangements for you to view the property if you wish to do so.
