The Premier’s Disability Advisory Council (PDAC) assists the Tasmanian Government and broader community to enable the full participation of people with disability in all aspects of community life, in accord with the vision outlined in Accessible Island: Tasmania’s Disability Framework for Action 2018-2021.

The Premier’s Disability and Advisory Council (PDAC) assists the Tasmanian Government to implement and develop disability frameworks including Accessible Island: Tasmania’s Disability Framework for Action 2018-2021 and provides advice on whole-of-government policy and programs that impact on Tasmanians with disability.

Accessible Island is a whole-of-government, rights-based policy that sets out a vision for the full participation of people with disability in Tasmanian community life.

PDAC’s work program includes:

  • advising the Tasmanian Government on strategic priorities to increase the participation of people with disability;
  • providing advice on Tasmanian Government policies and programs that impact on people with disability; and
  • monitoring the Tasmanian Government’s performance in relation to the implementation of disability policy.

PDAC is chaired by the Premier and has up to 11 community members. Membership includes:

  • Tasmanians with disability;
  • parents, care-givers or family members of people with disability;
  • people who are involved in disability service provision, education or advocacy;
  • people who are actively involved in supporting the social participation of people with disability through involvement in community organisations; and
  • practitioners, clinicians or researchers in areas relevant to the lives of people with disability.

People with disability are particularly encouraged to apply.

PDAC community members:

  • attend meetings with the Premier, relevant Ministers and senior State Government staff;
  • provide advice on government policy in collaboration with their PDAC colleagues;
  • review annual reports from Tasmanian Government departments on progress with implementation of the DFA, and prepare an annual report to Government on PDAC’s findings;
  • contribute to working group projects, submissions and reports prepared on behalf of PDAC; and
  • liaise and consult with their networks to keep informed about the issues affecting Tasmanians with disability.

PDAC meets twice a year with the Premier and the Minister for Disability Services and Community Development.  PDAC meetings are usually two hours duration and take place during normal business hours. These meetings are held in Hobart.

PDAC community members also meet out of session at least twice a year to progress PDAC’s work program.

Out of session business (for example, attending out of session meetings, reading documents, providing feedback and liaising with networks) may take between two and five hours per month.

Most of PDAC's out of session work is conducted by email. Hard copies of e-mails and attachments are sent to members by post and can be provided in a variety of formats.

Community members are appointed for a three-year term.

Participation on PDAC is voluntary. PDAC community members are reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses associated with attending meetings and conducting other PDAC business.
