Older Tasmanians have a wealth of knowledge and experience that can help build a more inclusive and vibrant Tasmania, and support the social and economic growth of the State.

In Tasmania, our population is the oldest of all states and territories, and is also ageing at the fastest rate. As of June 2017, the Australian Bureau of Statistics estimated that there were:

  • 522,152 people living in Tasmania
  • Of these 100,688 (19.3%) were over 65 years of age
  • 208,311 (39.9%) were over 50 years of age
  • In addition, the number of people aged 85 years and over is growing rapidly. Greater life expectancy is good reason for celebration.

Older people are a valuable asset to our community and play a vital role contributing in a diversity of ways. All older people should have the opportunity to participate in all aspects of community.

On 23 May 2017, the Tasmanian Government released Strong, liveable communities: Tasmania’s Active Ageing Plan 2017-2022The Plan aims to create a Tasmania that’s the best place to live, work, invest and to be part of a family as we grow older. There are four action areas to support Tasmanians to age well and overcome systemic barriers to participation: health; lifelong learning; participation; and security.

The Tasmanian Government provides funding to the Council on the Ageing Tasmania  (COTA) to act as the peak body representing the interests of older people, and the older persons sector. COTA delivers Seniors Week on behalf of the Tasmanian Government.

Communities, Sport and Recreation coordinates and supports the Tasmanian Government's priorities in relation to older Tasmanians and may be contacted by emailing olderpersons@communities.tas.gov.au or phoning (03) 6232 7201.
